Fun run
Gonna fly in Philly? Join our 5K fun run up the “Rocky steps”
By Teresa Schmedding, ACES executive committee
IMDB describes the 1976 sleeper hit “Rocky” as a movie about a “small-time boxer (who) gets a once-in-a-lifetime chance to fight the heavyweight champ in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.”
Sound familiar to anyone? Most copy editors fight heavyweight champs in their offices every day, striving to go the distance through long, convoluted copy. So let’s fill the streets of Philly for a 5K fun run/walk from the hotel to the Rocky steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. We can’t guarantee you’ll hear “Gonna Fly Now” as you race (or limp) up the steps, or that you’ll go on to defeat the Apollo Creed in your office, but we can promise your $30 donation will help fund the scholarships of worthy copy editing students.
We’ll meet in the lobby of the Loews at 6:45 p.m. the Wednesday before the conference, April 14, and a race leader (also known as Neil Holdway) will start us off while I bring up the rear to make sure no one gets lost. We’ll make our way past Love Park, down the Avenue of Flags and up the Rocky Steps as the sun is setting. Then we'll wend our way back to Tavern on Broad, where we’ll partake in more than raw eggs and hand out some race prizes. Maps of the route will be available in the coming future.
We ask that you either collect $30 in pledges or donate the same amount. All pledges/donations go to the ACES scholarship fund and are tax-deductible (checks, cash and credit cards accepted).
Don’t be worried if you’ve got the athletic skills on par with Talia Shire; everyone is welcome. In this fun run the emphasis is on “fun.”
No advance registration is required, but you’re encouraged to drop me a note at tschmedding@dailyherald.com so I can block out space in Tavern on Broad (and if, for some crazy reason, we get more than 100 people, I need to get a permit from the city). If you have any questions, contact me.
We hope to see you there!
